President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday night restricting Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) eligibility for individuals engaged in illegal immigration, certain protest activities, and other actions opposed by his administration.
The order rolls back Biden-era expansions of student loan forgiveness, citing concerns that funds were being misused to support activist organizations. The directive bars PSLF eligibility for those who:
- Violate federal immigration laws
- Engage in state law violations, such as trespassing, vandalism, or obstruction of highways
- Support terrorism
- Participate in child abuse, including what it calls “transgender sanctuary trafficking”
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett stated the policy targets NGOs and nonprofits involved in illegal immigration and foreign terrorist support. Education Secretary Linda McMahon affirmed that the PSLF program will not be eliminated but will follow new eligibility guidelines.
The move comes as Trump cracks down on campus protests, recently pulling $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University over its handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
