Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has joined TikTok, the Chinese-owned short video platform he attempted to ban during his presidency. Politico reported that Trump posted a launch video on his account (@realdonaldtrump) on Saturday night, featuring him greeting fans at an Ultimate Fighting Championship event in Newark, New Jersey. By 0800 GMT, the account had over 450,000 followers.

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, is currently challenging a U.S. law requiring it to sell TikTok by January 2025 or face a ban. The White House supports ending Chinese ownership on national security grounds but does not advocate for a complete ban on the app. TikTok asserts it will not share U.S. user data with the Chinese government and has implemented significant privacy protections.

Trump’s 2020 attempt to ban TikTok was blocked by the courts. While he maintains that the platform poses a national security threat, he has also expressed concerns that banning it would negatively impact young users and benefit Meta Platforms’ Facebook, which he has criticized.

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign joined TikTok in February.
