President Donald Trump has directed the Defense Department to create an “Iron Dome for America,” inspired by Israel’s missile defense system. Unlike Israel’s short-range defense, the U.S. version will target advanced threats, resembling the Reagan-era Strategic Defense Initiative.

The executive order calls for accelerating space-based defense, including the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor layer and space-based interceptors for boost-phase missile destruction. It also suggests using laser-based weapons to counter hypersonic and ballistic threats.

With rising tensions involving Russia and China, Trump aims to deter nuclear war by reviving comprehensive missile defense. A system capable of neutralizing threats early could prevent nuclear escalation. Russian officials condemned the plan, claiming it undermines deterrence and militarizes space. However, Trump’s order aligns with the “peace through strength” doctrine, ensuring U.S. security through superior military capability.
