President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to raise entrance and recreation pass fees for non-U.S. residents at national parks.
The order instructs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to “develop a strategy” for increasing fees on foreign tourists while keeping prices low for Americans. Trump said the move will help fund park improvements and deliver on his “America First” agenda.
The change could generate over $90 million annually, according to the department’s 2026 budget proposal. Current entrance fees range from $20 per person to $35 per vehicle for parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite.
Trump also ordered “preferential treatment” for U.S. residents in park permit and reservation systems. Details were not immediately available.
The order also revoked a 2017 Obama-era memorandum promoting diversity in parks, amid broader Trump administration efforts to scale back diversity programs. It follows Trump’s 2025 cuts to the National Park Service, which has lost nearly 25% of its staff since he took office.
Trump also created the “Make America Beautiful Again” Commission, chaired by Burgum, to expand recreation access and conservation efforts.
