Over 24 hours after Minnesota House Democratic Leader Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in what officials describe as a “politically motivated assassination,” President Donald Trump had not contacted Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, according to the governor’s office.

The shootings have shaken lawmakers nationwide. Hortman and her husband were killed in their Twin Cities home by 57-year-old Vance Boelter, who posed as a police officer. Boelter also allegedly shot and injured state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife in a separate attack. A manifesto recovered by investigators included a target list of Democratic officials and abortion rights supporters.

Trump condemned the violence Saturday, calling it “horrific,” but when asked Sunday whether he would call Walz, he replied, “I think he’s a terrible governor… but I may call him.” Walz has already spoken with Vice President J.D. Vance and former President Biden.

Federal support is underway. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for Boelter’s capture, and Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed prosecution “to the fullest extent of the law.”
