President Donald Trump fired Gen. C.Q. Brown, Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Friday night and announced plans to dismiss the Navy’s top admiral and the Air Force’s second-in-command. The unprecedented move is expected to create ripple effects across U.S. military leadership.
Trump nominated retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine to replace Brown. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that nominations are also being sought to replace Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti and Air Force Vice Chief Gen. James Slife.
Brown, who was visiting troops at the southern border, is only the second Black officer to hold the top military role. Franchetti, the first woman on the Joint Chiefs, was informed of her dismissal by Hegseth on Friday night.
The firings clear out decades of military experience and could trigger a rapid reshuffling of leadership across the armed forces. Experts note that appointing a retired three-star general as Joint Chiefs chair is highly unusual and may require congressional approval.
