Former President Donald Trump is preparing for a significant shift as he faces Vice President Kamala Harris in an upcoming debate. The dynamics have changed drastically since his previous debate with President Biden, as Harris brings a different energy to the race. GOP strategist Matt Gorman emphasized that Harris has transformed the contest, creating a closer race in key swing states.

Harris’s candidacy has energized Democrats, with strong fundraising and enthusiasm, narrowing the gap in crucial battlegrounds. Trump and his campaign have struggled to adapt, leading to moments of tension, including Trump’s controversial remarks about Harris’s ethnicity and personal life. A GOP operative warned Trump to avoid such attacks, advising him to focus on policy to succeed.

Harris, less experienced in debating compared to Biden, may face challenges in policy discussions, with some Republicans noting her past struggles during interviews. However, she is expected to use Trump’s legal troubles, including his recent conviction on financial fraud, as a key point of attack. Trump’s team is reportedly preparing him to counter such moments, with former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard playing a role in his debate prep.

Microphones will once again be muted when candidates are not speaking, a change that helped Trump stay more disciplined in the previous debate. Harris’s team had pushed for live microphones, arguing it would allow more direct exchanges, but the Trump campaign successfully pushed for muted mics. Despite this, Harris is expected to try to provoke Trump, aiming to exploit his legal vulnerabilities.
