Donald Trump, former U.S. President and current presidential candidate, faced a hostile reception at the Libertarian National Convention. The crowd, largely composed of libertarians who advocate for limited government and individual freedom, booed and heckled Trump. They criticized his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly his rush to create a vaccine and his perceived lack of action against public health restrictions on the unvaccinated.

Despite the hostility, Trump attempted to appeal to the libertarian crowd, highlighting their shared policy positions with Republicans on issues such as taxes and government size. He urged unity in defeating his election opponent, President Joe Biden, which was met with mixed reactions.

Trump’s appearance at the convention also indicated his campaign’s concern about third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an anti-vaccine advocate. Trump criticized Kennedy as a “fake” anti-vaccination proponent. Polls suggest Kennedy could draw votes from both Trump and Biden, but it’s unclear who would be more affected.

Trump made several promises to the crowd, including appointing a libertarian to his cabinet if he wins the election. He also pledged to commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the Silk Road website, a move that was met with applause. Ulbricht’s life sentence is viewed by libertarians as an example of government and judicial overreach.
