President Donald Trump is under fire from congressional Democrats over reports that Qatar’s royal family plans to donate a $400 million Boeing 747-8 jet for his exclusive use as Air Force One — and later for his presidential library.
The gift, first reported by ABC News, remains under review by the U.S. and Qatari governments, with Qatar’s Ministry of Defense confirming legal discussions are ongoing. The plane, described as a “flying palace,” has yet to be cleared for security and will not be used on Trump’s current Middle East trip.
While the White House insists the gift will comply with all legal requirements, Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) has requested an investigation from the GAO, Defense Department inspector general, and Office of Government Ethics, calling it the “most valuable gift ever conferred on a President.” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) argued it violates the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, while Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) warned it signals pay-to-play diplomacy.
Trump hit back Sunday night on Truth Social, calling Democrats “World Class Losers,” writing:
“The Defense Department is getting a GIFT, FREE OF CHARGE… so bothers the Crooked Democrats that they insist we pay TOP DOLLAR. Anybody can do that!”
Despite public outcry, Qatar denies a finalized deal exists. The proposed transfer remains in legal limbo, with both nations’ defense departments yet to finalize terms.
