Washington, DC — President Donald Trump sparked immediate backlash Monday after commenting on the apparent homicide of film director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, using a Truth Social post to attribute their deaths to what he called “Trump derangement syndrome.”
In the post, Trump claimed Reiner, a longtime Democratic donor and vocal critic of his presidency, had died due to anger he allegedly provoked in others through what Trump described as an “incurable” obsession with opposing him. Trump wrote that Reiner’s criticism of the administration had driven people “crazy,” before concluding the message with condolences.
Authorities said Reiner and his wife were found stabbed to death in their Hollywood-area home Sunday afternoon, and the incident is being investigated as a possible homicide. Law enforcement officials have not released details on suspects or motives.
Reiner had been an outspoken critic of Trump for years, frequently warning that the president posed a threat to democratic institutions. In past interviews, Reiner accused Trump of authoritarian tendencies and habitual dishonesty, remarks that often drew sharp responses from Trump and his allies.
Trump’s comments were quickly condemned across the political spectrum. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a frequent Trump critic within the GOP, called the remarks “inappropriate and disrespectful.” Prominent Democrats, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Barack Obama, issued public statements expressing condolences and praising Reiner’s career and civic engagement.
Critics argued that Trump’s post crossed a line by politicizing a violent death, while supporters defended the president as responding to years of personal attacks. The White House did not issue additional clarification following the post.
