President-elect Donald Trump expressed support for H-1B visas, a controversial topic within his conservative base, during an interview with the New York Post. “I’ve always liked the visas,” Trump stated, despite previously calling them “very bad” and “unfair” to U.S. workers.
During his presidency, Trump implemented a “Hire American” policy aimed at prioritizing highly skilled or high-paid applicants for these visas. However, he acknowledged utilizing the program extensively for his businesses. “I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B,” he remarked.
Trump did not indicate whether he would adjust visa policies upon taking office in January. His hardline stance on illegal immigration remains a cornerstone of his political platform, but his coalition is now divided over tech industry reliance on foreign workers. Critics argue the visas undermine U.S. workers, while tech leaders, including Elon Musk, insist they are essential for hard-to-fill positions.
