At least three African countries have now reached agreements with the Trump administration to accept deportees from the United States, with Uganda becoming the latest.

Uganda’s foreign ministry confirmed Thursday it struck a “temporary” arrangement with Washington, though it will not accept unaccompanied minors or those with criminal records. Officials said the preference is for deportees from African nations. Details on numbers were not provided.

Rwanda accepted 250 deportees earlier this month under a separate deal, offering resettled migrants workforce training, healthcare, and housing. South Sudan also agreed to take deportees after the Supreme Court in July upheld the administration’s plan to send migrants there despite no ties to the country; eight convicted criminals are now in South Sudanese custody.

In addition, the administration sent five men with criminal records to Eswatini, though the country later said it would return them to their home nations.

The deportation pacts are part of President Trump’s broader effort to carry out mass deportations and expand immigration enforcement worldwide.
