Former President Donald Trump intensified his rhetoric against Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, repeating a debunked conspiracy theory that they were eating pets. Speaking in Arizona, Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for the surge of migrants at the southern border, describing it as a “military invasion” and claiming the country is being “occupied by a foreign element.”

Focusing on Springfield, Trump falsely claimed that 20,000 Haitian migrants were overwhelming the town of 58,000, causing destruction. The Associated Press reported that around 15,000 Haitians have arrived in Springfield in recent years. Many are protected under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), allowing them to work and remain in the U.S. due to Haiti’s turmoil.

Trump also echoed unfounded concerns from local officials about migrants straining social services and repeated the false allegation of pet abductions, which Springfield authorities have firmly denied. Despite these falsehoods, Trump continues to emphasize immigration as a key issue in his attacks on Harris, who has focused on addressing the root causes of migration in Central America. Polls indicate that Trump retains more trust than Harris on immigration issues among voters.
