Donald Trump ordered a formal investigation Wednesday into whether Joe Biden‘s aides used autopen signatures to conceal his alleged cognitive decline and unlawfully exercise presidential power. The directive tasks White House counsel and Attorney General Pam Bondi with probing whether there was a conspiracy to deceive the public and execute executive functions in Biden’s name.
“This conspiracy marks one of the most dangerous and concerning scandals in American history,” Trump claimed in a memo, asserting that autopens were misused for significant policy decisions. While Trump admitted to using the autopen during his presidency, he claimed it was only for minor paperwork.
Biden pushed back in a statement, calling the accusations “ridiculous and false,” and affirming he made all major decisions during his presidency. Trump’s allegations build on GOP efforts to question Biden’s mental acuity, a topic revived after former special counsel Robert Hur described Biden as a “well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.”
The House Oversight Committee, led by Rep. James Comer, is also investigating related matters.
