President Trump announced Friday that the United States is ending all trade negotiations with Canada and will impose new tariffs on Canadian goods within a week. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “We are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately.”
The move follows Canada’s implementation of a digital services tax (DST), which targets revenue from U.S. tech companies. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said an investigation is expected into the tax and warned of additional trade restrictions.
Payments under the DST are due Monday, and U.S. business groups had urged a delay while talks continued. “We were hoping the new [Mark] Carney administration would at least put a brake on that,” Bessent said.
The announcement also comes ahead of the expiration of the “Liberation Day” tariff pause, raising concerns of broader global tariff hikes. While some nations have launched DSTs without harming trade deals, Trump’s approach signals a shift toward unilateral tariff impositions.
