President Donald Trump announced Thursday he is ending trade negotiations with Canada after officials there launched an ad campaign quoting former President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 warning about the dangers of tariffs. Trump accused Canada of trying to “interfere” with a pending Supreme Court case reviewing his authority to impose wide-ranging tariffs.

“Tariffs are very important to the national security and economy of the U.S.A.,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford introduced the ad earlier this month, featuring Reagan’s remarks that high tariffs “inevitably lead to retaliation” and economic collapse. The campaign drew attention amid Trump’s 35% tariff on Canadian imports announced in August, though goods covered under the 2020 U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact remain exempt.

Canada remains one of America’s largest trading partners, particularly in energy and manufacturing. Prime Minister Mark Carney recently met with Trump at the White House, where both acknowledged strong ties despite ongoing disputes. “There’s still great love between the two countries,” Trump said, “but we are competing for the same business.”
