President Donald Trump defended his decision on Friday to end the federal security detail for Dr. Anthony Fauci, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who faced threats during his role in the COVID-19 pandemic response. Trump stated, “You can’t have a security detail for the rest of your life because you worked for government,” suggesting Fauci fund his own protection given his earnings.

The decision, which also applied to former officials John Bolton and Mike Pompeo, drew criticism given Fauci’s prominent role during the pandemic and ongoing safety concerns. A source confirmed that Fauci’s federal protection ended Thursday, prompting him to hire private security.

Fauci, once a key advisor to Trump, distanced himself from the administration after criticizing its pandemic response. Before leaving office, former President Joe Biden pardoned Fauci, emphasizing gratitude for his public service.
