President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of military troops to Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, granting them authority to use “full force” if needed.
Trump said the move came at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, citing alleged attacks on immigration facilities “by Antifa and other domestic terrorists.” He directed War Secretary Pete Hegseth to send “all necessary troops to protect war ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE facilities under siege.”
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson criticized the sudden federal influx, saying he had not requested troops and warning it was a political distraction. “Imagine if the federal government sent instead 100 teachers or 100 engineers or 100 addiction specialists,” he said.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) urged residents not to be provoked, accusing Trump of trying to “incite violence.”
The order follows Trump’s designation of Antifa as a domestic terror organization earlier this week. Similar deployments have already occurred in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles after violence near federal immigration sites.
