Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Monday he did not propose renaming New York’s Penn Station as “Trump Station,” disputing media reports that he offered to restore federal funding for the Gateway tunnel project in exchange for the name change.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump reiterated his opposition to the multibillion-dollar Gateway project, which would build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River connecting New Jersey and New York City. He called the initiative a “boondoggle” that could cost “many BILLIONS OF DOLLARS more than projected,” warning of potential overruns without stricter oversight.
Trump denied he “brought up” renaming Penn Station, claiming the suggestion came from “certain politicians and construction union heads.” He labeled reports tying funding restoration to a name change as “more fake news.”
The president froze $16 billion earmarked for the Gateway project in October. Multiple outlets previously reported that he floated restoring those funds if Democrats agreed to rename Penn Station and Virginia’s Dulles International Airport after him. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) reportedly rejected the idea, noting he lacks authority to change the station’s name.
The administration has not announced any plans to revisit the funding freeze.
