Former President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday he never called for Hillary Clinton to be jailed, despite his 2016 campaign rhetoric.

In a “Fox & Friends” interview, Trump, recently found guilty of 34 felony counts, responded to a reminder of his past attacks on Clinton. “I beat her,” Trump said. “It’s easier when you win. They always said ‘lock her up,’ and I felt it would have been a terrible thing. And then this happened to me.”

Trump added, “I didn’t say ‘lock her up,’ but the people said ‘lock her up, lock her up.’ Then, we won. And I said, all right, come on, just relax, let’s go, we’ve got to make our country great.”

However, Trump did demand Clinton be imprisoned during his campaign, and the “lock her up” chant was a rallying cry even after the 2016 election. He also pledged to investigate Clinton with a special counsel, though none was appointed.

It remains uncertain if Trump will face prison time after his conviction for falsifying business records, which carries a maximum sentence of four years. Alternatives could include fines, home confinement, or probation.
