President Donald Trump is calling for the removal of his official portrait hanging in Colorado’s State Capitol, claiming the artwork is “purposefully distorted.” In a Truth Social post Sunday, Trump said the painting, which has been displayed since 2019, is “truly the worst” and criticized the artist, who also painted former President Obama.
Trump accused Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D) of allowing the “Radical Left” to disrespect him and suggested that the state’s residents are angry over the portrait. “In any event, I would much prefer not having a picture than having this one,” Trump wrote. He also linked the issue to crime in Aurora, Colorado, referencing the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang.
The portrait was commissioned during Trump’s first term through a GoFundMe campaign led by Colorado Republicans. A spokesperson for Gov. Polis responded, saying the governor appreciates the president’s interest in the State Capitol and its artwork, noting its historic materials and collection of presidential portraits.
