President Donald Trump stated that U.S. support for Ukraine should come with compensation in the form of $500 billion worth of its mineral resources. In an interview with Fox News, Trump said Ukraine had “essentially agreed” to provide rare earth elements and other resources in return for American aid.
“I told them we have to get something. We can’t continue to pay this money,” Trump said. Ukraine possesses valuable deposits of lithium, titanium, coal, oil, gas, and uranium, though many are in Russian-occupied areas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested allowing U.S. companies to develop Ukraine’s natural resources as part of his “victory plan” for economic recovery. “The Americans helped the most, and therefore the Americans should earn the most,” he told Reuters.
Trump’s remarks have drawn criticism from European leaders, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling the approach “very egotistic, very self-centered.”
