President Donald Trump will delay a portion of the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for one month, following requests from major automakers, the White House announced Wednesday.
“We spoke with the big three auto dealers,” White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters. “We are going to give a one-month exemption on any autos coming through the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).”
Auto trade is a significant component of U.S. commerce with Canada and Mexico, contributing to $345 billion of the $1.6 trillion total trade between the nations last year. The U.S. imported $120 billion in vehicles from Canada and $225 billion from Mexico.
The temporary exemption offers relief to automakers but does not signal a reversal of Trump’s tariff policies, which he argues will bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.
