Donald Trump on Monday denounced Brazil’s Supreme Court for trying former President Jair Bolsonaro over his alleged role in a 2023 coup attempt, calling it a “witch hunt” and vowing to monitor the proceedings closely. Trump praised Bolsonaro as a victim of political persecution and compared the trial to investigations he himself has faced, writing, “This happened to me, times 10.”
Bolsonaro, already barred from office until 2030, thanked Trump, calling him a “role model for faith and resilience.” His son Eduardo, now based in the U.S., has called for sanctions on Brazil’s top judge overseeing the probes.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded firmly, declaring, “We are a sovereign nation,” and adding, “No one is above the law.” Lula further criticized Trump’s recent threat to impose 10% tariffs on BRICS-aligned nations and dismissed Trump’s commentary: “Go take care of your own life, not ours.”
