At the World Economic Forum, former President Donald Trump announced he would use an energy emergency declaration to expedite approval for power stations dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) centers. He emphasized that these facilities would have on-site electric generation, bypassing reliance on utilities.

Trump stated that AI development requires doubling the U.S. energy supply and pledged to enable companies to construct power stations, including coal as a potential backup. “Under emergency declaration, I can get the approvals done myself without years of waiting,” he said.

The declaration, which Trump initiated on his first day back in office, unlocks powers to expand energy infrastructure. He also proposed a $500 billion investment in AI-related infrastructure earlier this week.

Critics, including Tyson Slocum of Public Citizen, accused Trump of prioritizing corporate interests, warning that his plan could increase utility costs, worsen air quality, and drive up greenhouse gas emissions.
