President-elect Donald Trump criticized Panama Canal fees on Truth Social, calling them exorbitant despite U.S. contributions to Panama. He threatened to demand U.S. oversight of the canal if changes aren’t made. “This complete ‘rip-off’ of our Country will immediately stop,” he stated.

Panama charges varying fees for canal passage, ranging from $0.50 to $300,000 based on vessel size and purpose. Trump referred to the 1979 treaty under President Carter, which transferred canal control to Panama in 1999, as a “foolish decision,” and emphasized that the canal wasn’t meant for foreign management or high U.S. tariffs.

Citing the canal’s significance for U.S. trade and national security, Trump pledged to ensure its secure and efficient operation, claiming the U.S. is being treated unfairly. He called the canal’s construction under President Teddy Roosevelt a landmark achievement in foreign policy.
