President-elect Donald Trump criticized former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans for extending the debt ceiling to January 1, 2025, calling it a “dumb political decision.” The May 2023 bipartisan vote of 314-117 avoided a government default but, according to Trump, gave Republicans “nothing in return.” He argued Democrats should have been forced to address the issue under Biden’s administration.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned lawmakers that another debt ceiling hike will be needed in 2025, with extraordinary measures expected to sustain U.S. obligations until midyear.
