President Donald Trump criticized FEMA during a press conference in Los Angeles while addressing the response to devastating wildfires that have destroyed over 16,000 structures and killed at least 28 people. Trump suggested replacing FEMA with localized disaster response systems, arguing that states like California could handle emergencies more effectively without federal involvement.
He labeled FEMA as “very expensive” and “mostly failed,” citing delays in rebuilding efforts and past responses, such as during Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. Trump also pledged to expedite water flow to Southern California to aid fire suppression through an executive order.
California officials, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, pushed back on Trump’s claims, highlighting measures to expedite rebuilding and requesting federal assistance. Trump also discussed reducing tariffs on building materials and improving forest management. The fires, spanning over 55,000 acres, have required nearly 40,000 emergency personnel for containment efforts.
