During a rally in Michigan, former President Trump repeatedly criticized Vice President Harris and the Biden administration’s response to Hurricane Helene. He claimed the federal efforts were worse than the response to Hurricane Katrina, alleging that FEMA had insufficient funds because resources were diverted to housing for migrants. The White House firmly denied this, with spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández calling the claim “FALSE” and clarifying that FEMA’s disaster funds are separate from other programs.
President Biden has deployed over 4,800 federal officials and requested Congress return from recess to secure additional funding. Biden has visited storm-affected states, while Vice President Harris is also expected to visit North Carolina. Trump’s comments echo his history of politicizing disaster responses, similar to his actions during hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Hurricane Dorian in 2019.
The storm has killed more than 200 people, making it the deadliest since Hurricane Katrina.
