President-elect Donald Trump attributed the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement announced Wednesday to his November election win. “This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory,” Trump stated on Truth Social, claiming it demonstrated his administration’s commitment to peace.
Trump highlighted the role of his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, who collaborated with President Biden’s team to finalize the agreement. He pledged ongoing efforts to prevent Gaza from becoming a “terrorist safe haven” and to strengthen regional peace through the Abraham Accords.
The Trump-era accords normalized relations between Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain but excluded Saudi Arabia. Trump’s recent claims that Iran could join the accords remain unfulfilled.
The Biden administration had been working on a ceasefire deal, reportedly nearing success before the October 7 Hamas attack disrupted progress.
