President Donald Trump said Friday he is weighing large-scale sanctions and tariffs on Russia, aiming to force Moscow and Kyiv to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

His remarks come as members of his administration prepare to meet with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia next week. The move follows Trump’s suspension of U.S. military aid and intelligence sharing with Kyiv, a decision that has raised concerns among European allies.

Trump has been less critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin than of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he clashed with in a recent Oval Office meeting. His public stance on Russia has sparked fears that the U.S. is aligning more closely with the Kremlin.

The Biden administration previously imposed extensive sanctions on Russia, targeting its energy and defense sectors, but Trump’s latest statement signals a potential new wave of economic pressure.
