President Donald Trump said Thursday he is considering revoking Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 240,000 Ukrainians who fled to the United States after Russia’s 2022 invasion, though no final decision has been made.

“We’re not looking to hurt anybody,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, acknowledging that Ukrainians “have gone through a lot”. However, revoking TPS could pave the way for mass deportations.

The Biden administration had extended TPS protections until October 2026, citing ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, Biden’s Uniting for Ukraine program provided two-year paroles for those with U.S.-based sponsors.

The potential revocation of Ukrainian TPS aligns with Trump’s broader immigration crackdown. His administration has ended similar parole programs for Haitians, Cubans, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans. In January, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also rescinded TPS for 600,000 Venezuelans and 520,000 Haitians.

Trump’s restrictive immigration policies have led to legal challenges, including lawsuits over his refugee admissions pause and the termination of TPS for Venezuelans.
