President Trump said Friday that Samsung will also face tariffs alongside Apple unless the companies shift iPhone production to the United States. Speaking after signing energy executive orders, Trump told reporters a 25% tariff would apply to all foreign-made iPhones, likely starting at the end of June.
“It would be also Samsung and anybody that makes that product. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be fair,” Trump said. He added that Apple could manufacture domestically at similar costs due to automation.
Trump targeted Apple CEO Tim Cook, who pledged $500 million for U.S. investment earlier this year. “You’re not going to sell into here without tariffs,” Trump said, referencing Cook’s plan to expand production in India.
The president also dismissed concerns about consumer impact, saying companies like Walmart should absorb tariff costs. “Sometimes Walmart will eat it,” he said.
Trump’s broader tariff strategy includes a 50% duty on European Union goods, set to begin June 1, unless manufacturers relocate operations to the U.S.
