President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has commuted the prison sentence of former Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.), who had begun serving a seven-year term for wire fraud and identity theft.

Trump stated on Truth Social, “George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a commutation, releasing George Santos from prison immediately. Good luck George, have a great life!”

Santos’s attorney, Joe Murray, confirmed his release, referring to Trump as “the greatest President in U.S. history” and describing the decision as an answer to prayers. Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023 after it was revealed that he had fabricated parts of his biography and campaign records. He pleaded guilty to charges earlier this year.

In his statement, Trump defended the commutation by arguing that Democrats had committed “worse” offenses and cited Sen. Richard Blumenthal’s false military claims as an example. He recognized Santos, the first openly gay Republican elected to the House, for his “Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to always vote Republican.”

Before his imprisonment in June, Santos had commented on his scandal through social media, stating, “From the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news — what a ride it’s been! Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried … most days.”
