Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said Sunday that Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., is “unconstitutional” and “not sustainable.” Appearing on CBS’s Face the Nation, Moore added he would not authorize Maryland’s Guard to be sent to D.C.
Trump, in turn, rejected Moore’s invitation to participate in a “public safety walk” in Baltimore next month, citing the city’s crime rate. On Truth Social, Trump said Baltimore is “crime ridden” and warned he could deploy federal troops there as he has in D.C. and Los Angeles.
Moore defended his record, noting statewide homicides are down 20% since he took office in 2023, with Baltimore homicides falling 22% in the first half of 2025. Trump disputed those numbers, accusing the governor of “manipulating” statistics. The Department of Justice is investigating claims D.C. officials altered crime data.
Trump also suggested he may withhold funding for rebuilding Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, destroyed in 2024, and revived controversy over Moore’s Bronze Star, awarded belatedly last year after a paperwork error.
