Former President Donald Trump touted recent decisions by major newspapers, including The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, not to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris or any candidate in the upcoming election. Speaking at a North Carolina rally, Trump claimed, “They only endorse Democrats… They’re saying, ‘This Democrat’s no good.’”
The choice to forgo endorsements has been attributed to an attempt to avoid perceptions of bias, with Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos arguing in a recent op-ed that endorsements may damage media credibility without influencing voter decisions. Some Post staff, however, speculated that Bezos’s decision was motivated by business interests, which he denied.
Trump also noted USA Today owner Gannett’s similar stance, suggesting it indicated disapproval of Harris. Known for criticizing media critical of him, Trump has recently urged government scrutiny of certain broadcast networks.
