The Trump campaign has written to the Commission on Presidential Debates, requesting an earlier start and increased frequency for the planned debates between former President Trump and President Biden. This move is part of the Trump campaign’s ongoing efforts to pressure Biden into participating in fall debates, despite Trump having skipped all GOP primary debates this cycle.
Top Trump campaign advisers, Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, cited the commencement of early voting in many states as the reason for advancing the debate schedule. They argued that more Americans should have the opportunity to see the candidates before they start voting. They also suggested adding more debates to the existing schedule of three presidential and one vice-presidential debate for the 2024 cycle.
The advisers noted that by the first proposed debate date, September 16, over a million Americans are likely to have already cast their ballots through early voting. This number could rise to three million by the time of the second debate on October 1.
Despite his past refusal to participate in GOP primary debates and his previous criticisms of the Commission on Presidential Debates, Trump has recently expressed willingness to debate Biden “any time, any place.” Trump’s change of stance comes as he maintains a lead in battleground state polls.
Biden’s campaign has yet to commit to participating in the debates, and Biden himself has given non-committal responses when asked about the prospect, stating that it “depends on his behavior,” referring to Trump.
