A prayer in Spanish opened the event, with most of the 50 attendees, predominantly white, responding with “Amen!” despite not understanding the language. This marked the inauguration of the “Latino Americans for Trump” office, a collaboration between Donald Trump’s campaign, the Republican National Committee, and the Pennsylvania GOP in Reading.

Luis Fortuno, former Puerto Rico governor, emphasized the American Dream and hard work in his speech. Addressing Spanish speakers, he highlighted the need for change with “Necesitamos cambio.” This initiative aims to increase Hispanic support in Pennsylvania, a critical swing state. Trump’s strategy includes appealing to entrepreneurship and smaller government, targeting a demographic traditionally favoring Democrats.

Reading is a town of about 95,000, with 67% Latino population, primarily of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent. Biden’s approval among Hispanic adults has dipped, but Trump’s potential to capitalize remains uncertain.

This office launch follows a “Blacks for Trump” event in Philadelphia. In both events, attendees were mostly white. Trump held a rally in Las Vegas, courting Latino voters, but his rhetoric on immigration sparked controversy. Biden’s campaign criticizes Trump’s approach as superficial and racist. In contrast, Biden has established multiple offices in Pennsylvania, focusing on grassroots mobilization among Hispanic voters.

Reactions at the Reading event were mixed. Some dismissed Trump’s efforts as propaganda, while others supported his policies, such as extending the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
