During a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to honor service members killed in the Afghanistan War withdrawal, an altercation occurred involving Donald Trump’s campaign staff. According to a defense official, the campaign was warned against taking photographs in Section 60, where military personnel from Afghanistan and Iraq are buried. Despite this, NPR reported that two Trump staffers verbally abused and pushed a cemetery official who tried to enforce the rule.

Arlington National Cemetery confirmed “an incident” and emphasized that federal law prohibits political activities within the cemetery. Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, denied the allegations, stating that a private photographer was allowed, and blamed the altercation on an unnamed individual experiencing a “mental health episode.”

The incident has drawn criticism from various figures, including Democratic U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly, who called for more information to be released. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, downplayed the event, instead criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris over the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Arlington remains the resting place for over 400,000 service members, veterans, and their families.
