The Trump campaign’s vehement criticism of Project 2025, led by the Heritage Foundation, has caused concern among conservatives who fear alienating loyal Trump supporters. While Trump’s separation from the project was initially to counter Democratic attacks, public denunciations, such as those by Trump campaign advisors Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, have intensified. They described Project 2025 as a “pain in the a–” and welcomed its potential demise.

Project 2025, known for its 900-page “Mandate for Leadership” policy book, aims to provide a conservative roadmap for a new administration, including personnel recommendations. Some conservatives, like The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway, worry Trump’s disavowal suggests he hasn’t learned from past administration mistakes.

Despite policy differences, there is significant overlap between Trump’s platform and Project 2025’s proposals. The conflict is seen more as a power struggle over control of personnel in a potential second Trump administration. Trump’s campaign remains focused on winning the election, with no transition team head announced yet.
