President Donald Trump has called for billionaire philanthropist George Soros and his son to face charges under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, accusing them of backing nationwide protests against his administration.
“George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son, should be charged with RICO because of their support of Violent Protests, and much more, all throughout the United States of America,” Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. He added that Soros and his “group of psychopaths” had “caused great damage” to the country.
Soros, who has long been the subject of baseless right-wing conspiracy theories, funds left-leaning causes through his Open Society Foundations. The group responded to Trump’s remarks, saying it does not fund violent protests and supports “fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, including the rights to free speech and peaceful protest.”
The RICO statute, historically used against the mafia, targets organized criminal activity. Trump’s demand comes as his administration faces widespread demonstrations over immigration policies and threats to deploy federal troops into cities.
