Former President Donald Trump expressed outrage over the federal judge’s order for his longtime ally Steve Bannon to begin his four-month prison sentence, calling for members of the House committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, riot to be indicted. Trump labeled it a “Total and Complete American Tragedy” that Bannon and another former aide, Peter Navarro, face imprisonment for contempt of Congress for not complying with the investigation.

Trump accused the House panel of committing crimes by allegedly “deleting and destroying all material evidence,” which he claimed on Truth Social. He suggested that the prosecutions of political opponents must cease to preserve the country, implying potential retaliatory actions if he were re-elected. This comes after his own legal troubles, including 34 felony convictions for falsifying business records.

The January 6 committee, composed of seven Democrats and two Republicans (Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger), spent months probing the Capitol attack and recommended criminal charges against Trump. Despite claims of withheld information, former committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson denied any such actions.

On Thursday, a federal judge ordered Bannon, a former Trump campaign and White House adviser, to start his prison sentence by July 1 as he appeals his contempt of Congress conviction. Navarro, another former Trump adviser, is currently serving his sentence after his last-minute attempts to avoid prison failed.

Trump’s call for the indictment of the January 6 committee members follows his broader strategy of discrediting investigations and legal actions against him and his associates, framing them as politically motivated.
