President Trump claimed during a University of Alabama commencement speech that tech leaders who once opposed him are now among his supporters, saying, “They’re kissing my a‑‑.” Trump praised Elon Musk, calling him “terrific,” and noted that many Silicon Valley figures have shifted in his favor during his second term.
Trump pointed to renewed ties with Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Brad Smith. Several made trips to Mar-a-Lago ahead of his inauguration, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a longtime Democratic donor, contributed to Trump’s inaugural committee.
Musk has emerged as a top Trump ally, joining the campaign and raising $250 million. He now leads the Department of Government Efficiency.
Despite the outreach, Trump’s policies—including aggressive tariffs, censorship accusations, and antitrust actions—have challenged Big Tech. Still, Trump touted his business instincts and nontraditional path to the presidency, framing himself as a businessman more than a politician.
