President Donald Trump on Tuesday blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the ongoing war with Russia, stating that “he should have never started it” and could have negotiated a deal early on. Trump’s comments came after senior U.S. and Russian officials met in Saudi Arabia without Ukrainian representatives, sparking frustration in Kyiv.

Zelensky responded by accusing Trump of being influenced by Russian propaganda. “The U.S. president is living in a disinformation space fueled by Russia,” he said, adding that Kyiv rejected a U.S. rare-earth minerals deal because it lacked security guarantees.

Trump claimed the war would not have happened if he had been in office and suggested Ukraine should accept territorial concessions to end the conflict. His administration has drawn criticism for downplaying Ukraine’s NATO ambitions and questioning its role in negotiations.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called it “unrealistic” for Ukraine to reclaim its pre-2014 borders, raising further concerns among U.S. allies.
