President Donald Trump criticized the Obama Presidential Center’s construction in Chicago, claiming the project is “stuck” because it relies on “only women and DEI” builders. Trump’s remarks came Tuesday during a press conference where he responded to questions about the site’s architecture, calling it “not too pretty” and alleging that “they ran out of money.”

The $850 million Obama Presidential Center has faced delays since its 2021 groundbreaking, with completion now expected in spring 2026. The Obama Foundation’s diversity goals require at least 35% of subcontracts to go to minority-owned firms. Earlier this year, a Black-owned concrete subcontractor sued the project’s engineering firm for $40 million, alleging racial discrimination and unfair treatment.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has also criticized the center’s design, comparing it to the “Death Star.” Trump contrasted the Obama project with his own Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, calling it “big, beautiful” and efficiently built. He added that his planned presidential library in Miami will open after his second term, though it currently faces legal challenges.

The Obama Presidential Center will feature a 225-foot museum, a branch of the Chicago Public Library, and community spaces once completed.
