President Trump reignited tensions with California Gov. Gavin Newsom Friday, alleging that $100 million raised by the FireAid concert for wildfire victims is “missing.” In a Truth Social post, Trump called the fundraising effort a “Democrat inspired scam” and accused Newsom of mismanagement that contributed to the disaster.
The FireAid concert, featuring celebrities like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, raised $100 million for victims of the devastating January wildfires in Los Angeles. The event’s organizers clarified that direct payments were never promised, saying they partnered with vetted nonprofits to deliver aid. Advisory committee member Lisa Cleri Reale told The Los Angeles Times the fund is being distributed with care and transparency.
Trump claimed he “overruled” Newsom to release rebuilding funds and said federal housing permits were now approved. Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) is calling for a formal investigation into the disbursement of relief money.
The clash marks a continuation of Trump’s ongoing feud with Newsom, previously centered on wildfire prevention, immigration policy, and emergency declarations. Trump also blamed California for not releasing more water to prevent the fires.
The damage from the wildfires is expected to exceed $50 billion.
