WASHINGTON, D.C. — Conflicting claims emerged Saturday over a deadly strike on an Iranian school as U.S. officials continue investigating whether the blast was caused by American or Iranian forces. President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Iran was responsible for the bombing of Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, rejecting reports that the explosion may have been caused by a U.S. strike.

When asked about the incident, Trump said, “Based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran,” before Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth added that the Pentagon is still investigating. Hegseth also stated that “the only side that targets civilians is Iran.”

The attack reportedly killed more than 165 people, many of them children, making it the deadliest civilian incident since a joint U.S.–Israeli operation against Iranian targets began. According to reporting from The Hill, the school was located next to a compound belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Military investigators cited by Reuters indicated the destruction was likely caused by a U.S. strike, though the investigation remains ongoing. Satellite imagery reviewed by analysts also suggested damage patterns consistent with a precision airstrike.

Wes J. Bryant, a former Pentagon adviser on civilian harm, told the New York Times the strike appeared “picture perfect,” suggesting the school may have been hit due to target misidentification.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration has not confirmed U.S. involvement and cautioned reporters against attributing the attack to American forces while the Department of Defense review continues.
