President Donald Trump blamed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) diversity initiatives for weakening safety after a midair collision near Reagan National Airport.

Speaking from the White House, Trump called the incident “a tragedy of terrible proportions” but quickly criticized the Biden and Obama administrations for prioritizing diversity over merit in hiring. He cited FAA efforts to hire individuals with disabilities and accused officials of pushing diversity over qualifications.

“He’s run it right into the ground with his diversity,” Trump said of former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. When asked for evidence linking diversity to the crash, Trump responded that it was “common sense.”

The crash involved an American Airlines regional jet and a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. Trump’s administration has moved to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth vowing a “color-blind” Pentagon.
