The Trump administration has deported 120 Iranians from the U.S. in the first wave of what officials say could be hundreds more removals, according to Iranian state media and multiple reports.
A U.S.-chartered flight reportedly left Louisiana Monday night, sending detainees back to Iran via Qatar. An Iranian Foreign Ministry official said up to 400 Iranians will ultimately be returned, most of whom were detained after crossing into the U.S. illegally, often through Mexico.
The White House did not confirm the reported deal with Tehran but released a statement reiterating Trump’s pledge: “The Trump Administration is committed to fulfilling President Trump’s promise to carry out the largest mass deportation operation of illegal aliens in history, using all the tools at our disposal.”
The deportations mark a rare instance of cooperation between Washington and Tehran. For decades, scores of Iranians have fled the Islamic Republic to seek refuge in the U.S., particularly since the 1979 revolution.
The National Iranian American Council reported arrests of Iranian nationals have spiked under Trump. Earlier this year, U.S. officials sent Iranian Christian migrants to Central America as part of broader immigration restrictions.
