The Trump administration has fired several hundred Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees, disrupting operations during a busy travel weekend and weeks after a fatal mid-air collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Probationary workers received late-night termination emails Friday, according to David Spero, president of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists union. The affected personnel include radar, landing, and navigational aid maintenance workers, as well as at least one air traffic controller, an anonymous source told the Associated Press.
Spero stated that the firings were “without cause nor based on performance or conduct” and that notifications came from a non-government email address. More employees could be impacted over the holiday weekend.
The FAA already faces staffing shortages, with federal officials citing uncompetitive pay, long shifts, and mandatory retirements. The issue has raised concerns following close calls at U.S. airports. The Jan. 29 fatal crash involving a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines jet remains under investigation.
The Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, overseeing federal downsizing, did not respond to requests for comment. CNN first reported the firings.
